For four days in October, Essen once again becomes one of the great international meeting points for board games. SPIEL Essen 2026 takes place from 22 to 25 October at Messe Essen, Germany, bringing together the public, publishers, distributors, shops, industry professionals, designers and projects from many different countries.

The organisers present SPIEL as the largest public board game fair in the world. The figures help to understand its scale: in 2025 it welcomed 220,000 people from more than 80 nationalities, gathered 948 exhibitors from 50 countries and presented 1,716 new releases across 77,500 m² of exhibition space. In 2026 it grows even further: for the first time it occupies all eight halls at Messe Essen plus the Galeria, around 81,200 m², with room for up to 230,000 visitors.

Here is the practical information for your visit: which days still have tickets, opening hours, prices, how to get there, which new releases to expect and a few tips to make the most of a fair this size.

When does SPIEL Essen 2026 take place?

SPIEL Essen 2026 runs from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October 2026 at Messe Essen, in the German city of Essen. The venue address is Messeplatz 1, 45131 Essen, Germany.

The fair keeps its usual four-day format, with three full days from Thursday to Saturday and a slightly shorter final day on Sunday.

Are there still tickets for SPIEL Essen 2026?

This year tickets are selling out before the fair. According to the organisers:

  • Saturday 24 October: sold out.
  • Thursday 22 and Friday 23: 90% of tickets were already sold; very few are left.
  • Sunday 25: the day with the most availability.

In 2025 all four days sold out, so if you do not have a ticket yet, do not wait. The organisers ask visitors to buy only from the official ticket shop: fake resale offers are circulating, and ticket resale is prohibited.

SPIEL Essen 2026 opening hours

The official opening hours for the public are:

  • Thursday 22, Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October: 10:00 to 19:00.
  • Sunday 25 October: 10:00 to 18:00.

Holders of a trade ticket can enter from 9:30 through the fast lanes at the West, South and East entrances. New this year, the North entrance also opens during the morning peak. Before the halls open at 10:00 you can wait indoors in Hall 1A, next to the South entrance.

Tickets for SPIEL Essen 2026: prices and types

SPIEL Essen 2026 tickets are sold online only: there are no ticket desks at the venue. These are the prices in force since 5 August:

  • Day ticket: €25.
  • Reduced: €22.
  • Child (4 to 12): €16.
  • Family: €67.
  • Trade visitor: €46.
  • Children under 4: free.

The family ticket covers two people aged 13 or over and up to three children aged 4 to 12, who must enter together. The reduced ticket requires proof at the entrance and applies, among other cases, to students, people with a severe disability (minimum degree 50) and visitors in full cosplay. Trade tickets are limited to people working in the industry.

A few conditions worth knowing before you go:

  • Tickets cannot be refunded or changed to another day.
  • You can pass your ticket on to someone else with a short written authorisation and a copy of your ID.
  • If you leave the grounds and want to come back in, ask for a re-entry wristband on the way out: tickets cannot be scanned twice.

Trying games at the stands costs nothing extra: your ticket lets you walk the halls and join the demonstrations during the fair.

What will you find at SPIEL Essen?

SPIEL Essen is, above all, a fair for discovering and playing. For four days, large publishers, small independent labels, distributors, shops, designers, role-playing games, miniatures, card games and projects from very different markets come together in the same venue.

One of its main features is the sheer number of titles you can discover and try. For reference, 1,716 new releases were registered in 2025, and for 2026 the organisers expect well over 1,500 new games. Many publishers use Essen to launch titles, show prototypes or put games in front of the public for the first time. Demonstrations, signings and direct sales at the stands are also common.

Beyond the stands, there is a programme of its own throughout the four days:

  • SPIEL.talks: free daily talks on the Hall 4 stage, also streamed on YouTube.
  • Werewolves Night: on Thursday 22 at the Grugahalle (doors at 18:30), with a separate €10 ticket.
  • Educators Day: on Friday 23, dedicated to education.
  • Meet & Play: on Saturday 24, 14:00 to 18:00 in the Saal Essen, with content creators.

Almost 1,000 exhibitors from over 55 countries

The 2026 edition brings together almost 1,000 exhibitors from over 55 countries, according to the official website. The exhibitor list and the interactive hall plans have been available since August.

The growth also means SPIEL opens Hall 8 for the first time. With it, the fair occupies all eight halls of the venue plus the Galeria. For a first visit, the advice is clear: trying to discover the fair by simply walking from one end to the other is not the best strategy.

The official list of new releases was published on 3 September in the official SPIEL app, together with the programme and hall plans. There you can save favourites and see which stand each game is at.

Deutscher Spiele Preis 2026

SPIEL is also where the Deutscher Spiele Preis, the award voted by players, is presented. The top three for 2026, which the organisers list in alphabetical order until the ceremony, are Artengarten, Boss Fighters QR and Galactic Cruise. The final order is announced on Wednesday 21 October at the fair's press conference in the Grugahalle.

The professional side of SPIEL Essen

Although SPIEL is a fair fundamentally open to the public, it is also an enormous meeting point for the international board game industry.

In 2026 the organisers have strengthened that side with a B2B Matchmaking system for trade visitors and exhibitors, now built into the official app. It lets you create a professional profile, search for contacts based on what they offer or are looking for, chat directly and arrange meetings with an integrated calendar. Trade tickets also include entry from 9:30 and use of the B2B Lounge in Hall 7.

For publishers, distributors, shops, designers, manufacturers and other projects in the ecosystem, that concentration of professionals turns the four days in Essen into something more than a fair of new releases.

Meeplay will attend SPIEL Essen 2026

Meeplay will attend SPIEL Essen 2026 as a trade visitor. Our aim will be to make the most of one of the sector's main international meeting points to hold meetings, get to know projects and talk with publishers, companies, organisations and other people working around board games.

How to get to SPIEL Essen

Messe Essen is well connected to the city's main station, and the organisers recommend using public transport to avoid the traffic around the venue.

  • U11 underground from Essen Hauptbahnhof: about five minutes. The «Messe Ost» stop leads to the East entrance (Hall 8) and «Messe West/Süd» to the South and West entrances.
  • By plane: Düsseldorf airport is about 20 minutes away by car and has a rail connection; Essen/Mülheim airport is about 10 minutes away by car.
  • By car: the organisers recommend car parks P2 and P10, with shuttle buses to the venue every 10–15 minutes (from 8:00 at P2 and from 8:30 at P10).

How to prepare for a fair this big

With eight halls, the Galeria and almost a thousand exhibitors, it is worth arriving in Essen with some planning:

  • Download the official app, save your favourite games and find their stands before you travel.
  • Bring cash: each stand decides how it takes payment, and the ATMs on the grounds can run out of money.
  • If you plan to buy a lot, there is bag storage at the end of the Galeria (€3 per bag, card only) and a shipping service for your purchases in Hall 8 (stand 8A110).
  • You can bring your own food and drinks. Free Wi-Fi only reaches the entrance foyers, not the halls.

Rather than trying to see everything, it is probably more useful to set a few priorities and also leave free time to discover games and projects that were not on the list to begin with. A good part of the appeal of a fair this size lies precisely in the unexpected.
