For four days in October, Essen becomes one of the great international meeting points for board games once again. SPIEL Essen 2026 will take place from 22 to 25 October at Messe Essen, Germany, bringing together the public, publishers, distributors, shops, industry professionals, designers and projects from many different countries.
The organisers present SPIEL as the largest public board game fair in the world. The figures help to understand its scale: in 2025 it welcomed 220,000 people from more than 80 nationalities, gathered 948 exhibitors from 50 countries and presented 1,716 new releases across 77,500 m² of exhibition space. In 2026 it will grow even further: for the first time it will occupy all eight halls at Messe Essen, plus the Galeria, reaching around 81,200 m².

When does SPIEL Essen 2026 take place?
SPIEL Essen 2026 will run from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October 2026 at Messe Essen, in the German city of Essen. The venue address is Messeplatz 1, 45131 Essen, Germany.
The fair therefore keeps its usual four-day format, with three full days from Thursday to Saturday and a slightly shorter final day on Sunday.

Tickets for SPIEL Essen 2026: prices and types
Tickets for SPIEL Essen 2026 are sold exclusively online. The organisers state that there will be no ticket desks at the venue.
These are the prices in force since 5 August:
The family ticket covers two adults and up to three children between 4 and 12 years old. Children under 4 enter free of charge. The reduced ticket requires proof of eligibility and applies, among other cases foreseen by the organisers, to students and to people with certain degrees of disability.
Trying out games at the stands carries no extra cost: entry with your ticket lets you walk the halls and take part in the demonstrations available during the fair.
What will you find at SPIEL Essen?
SPIEL Essen is, above all, a fair for discovering and playing. Over four days, the same venue brings together large publishers, small independent labels, distributors, shops, design projects, role-playing games, miniatures, card games and proposals from very different markets.
One of its main features is the sheer number of titles you can discover and try during the fair. For reference, 1,716 new releases were registered in 2025. Many publishers use Essen to launch titles, show prototypes or put games in front of the public for the first time. Demonstrations, signings and direct sales at the stands are also common.
This makes SPIEL very different from simply walking around an exhibition: a large part of the experience consists precisely of sitting down, learning how a game works and playing it right there.
Almost 1,000 exhibitors at SPIEL Essen 2026
The 2026 edition will bring together almost 1,000 exhibitors from more than 50 countries, according to the official information published by SPIEL. The exhibitor list is already available and will be updated if there are changes before the fair opens.
Demand for space has again been very high: the organisers report that all stand space for 2026 is currently taken and that new applications go onto a waiting list.
The growth also means opening Halle 8 within SPIEL. With it, the fair will occupy all eight halls of the venue and the Galeria for the first time, with approximately 81,200 m² of total surface. The 2026 interactive hall plans are already available on the official website.
For a first visit, this leaves a fairly clear recommendation: trying to discover the fair simply by walking from one end to the other is probably not the best strategy.
Which games and new releases will be at SPIEL Essen 2026?
This is precisely one of the parts of this guide that we cannot complete yet.
The official list of SPIEL Essen 2026 new releases will be published on 3 September. On that same day the official SPIEL app will be updated with the 2026 content, including new releases, exhibitors, programme and interactive plans.
That is why we prefer not to publish now a supposed selection of “the best games of Essen 2026” based on rumours, scattered announcements or unofficial lists.

The new professional dimension of SPIEL Essen
Although SPIEL is a fair fundamentally open to the public, it is also an enormous meeting point for the international board game industry.
For 2026 the organisers have specifically reinforced that side with a new B2B Matchmaking system for trade visitors and exhibitors. The tool lets you create a professional profile, search for contacts according to what they offer or are looking for, chat directly and arrange meetings through an integrated calendar.
From 3 September the matchmaking will also be built into the official SPIEL app. Trade visitor tickets, which are limited to people working in the sector, also include entry from 9:30 and use of the B2B Lounge located in Halle 7.
For publishers, distributors, shops, designers, manufacturers and other projects in the ecosystem, that concentration of professionals turns the four days in Essen into something more than a fair of new releases.

How to get to SPIEL Essen
Messe Essen is well connected to the city's central station. The organisers themselves recommend using public transport to avoid the congestion that builds up around the venue during the fair.
From Essen Hauptbahnhof, the U11 line takes approximately five minutes to reach the venue and gives access to the West, South and East areas of Messe Essen.
For those travelling from outside Germany, Düsseldorf airport is one of the main options: Messe Essen is roughly 20 minutes by car from the airport and there is also a rail connection.
If you choose to drive, the organisers recommend car parks P2 and P10, connected to the venue by shuttle buses. Even so, for the busiest days SPIEL expressly advises prioritising public transport.
How to prepare for a fair this big
With eight halls, the Galeria and close to a thousand exhibitors, it is worth arriving in Essen with some planning.
The 2026 interactive plans and exhibitor list are already available, so you can start locating publishers and stands before the trip. From 3 September the official app will also let you check the 2026 edition information, save favourites, browse new releases and the programme, and use its tools for navigating the venue.
Rather than trying to see everything, it is probably more useful to set a few priorities and also leave free time to discover games and projects that were not on the list to begin with. A good part of the appeal of a fair this size lies precisely in the unexpected.
SPIEL Essen 2026 has only just begun
By the end of August we already know the dates, the opening hours, the prices, the layout of the halls and a good part of the exhibitors for SPIEL Essen 2026. But one of the most interesting pieces is still missing: the new releases arriving in Essen this year.
On 3 September we will get the first major information update. From then on we will be able to start separating the most interesting announcements from the enormous volume of launches surrounding each edition.
