What is Game of Drones

The high-pitched whine of an incoming FPV drone has become the modernday equivalent of the Stuka siren from the Second World War. From out of a clear blue sky, a drone appears, traveling so fast that it nearly outpace the noise of its electric motors. When Russian soldiers first hear an FPV drone as it dives to attack, often they have less than a second to live.

Game of Drones is a solitaire wargame about Ukraine’s front line Drone Teams. It is set in Summer 2024. In other words, it is about current events rather than history.

The game highlights the experience of commanding a Drone Team. Your unit is organized into four-man team (men and/or women, who often perform in these roles). Each Drone Team consists of a Drone Pilot (the role you play as the team commander), a Navigator (who guides your FPV and drone bombers to the target), a Sapper (the team’s explosives expert), and a Driver, who also provides personal security and general support to the team.

You name your Drone Team, name each of its team members, assign them to their duties, organize your operations, equip your team, deploy to the Zero Line (or “Contact Line”), coordinate with the Brigade Commander of the unit to which you are assigned, and support your assigned sector along the front line. You perform reconnaissance and artillery direction with Mavic drones, deep strike with bomb-dropping drones, and attack missions with FPV drones, each mounting a bomb that you remotely fly into the target through your VR goggles. You must endure attacks by Russians forces – if they can find your position.
