Distracted by the battle at Stonne the French High Command belatedly realised that 1st Panzer Division was heading west after crossing the Meuse at Sedan. All that could initially be flung in its path were the mechanised and horsed cavalry of 5th DLC. Defending amongst the wooded and hilly terrain near Bouvellemont they prepared to blunt the advance of an entire panzer division.
