What is Ave Caesar
Set in the Roman stadium Circus Maximus, in Ave Caesar, players use cards to move their chariots around a quasi-variable track.
The track itself has bottlenecks and lane-changing restrictions, which make the race interesting for the racers (very similar to Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix or Daytona 500). Players are required to race three laps, and they must stop to 'Hail Caesar' before they can finish (a pit stop). The game is light, but if you waste too many moves taking the longer, outside-routes on corners, you may not have enough movement to finish the race.
The object of the game is to be the first charioteer to complete three laps of the racing arena. Each player starts with a deck of 24 cards (four sets of cards numbered one through to six). Each player randomly takes three cards into their hand and take turns playing a card, moving their chariot the appropriate number of spaces and then drawing a card to fill their hand back to three cards. There are several places around the track where it narrows from two lanes to a single lane. Chariots finishing where the track narrows will block the chariots immediately behind, thus causing these teams to miss a turn.

What the community says about Ave Caesar
Fast and simple card-driven racing game. It allows for a bit of take-that. Theme is thin, but it works. I have the 1989 edition and the artwork is pretty basic. Utterly fun.
Great game both for the family and your cut-throat gamer group. I can see people getting upset in this game (and I have seen people getting upset ;-)) so be aware when playing this with your kids. Other than that very fun game with some tactical decisions, but not too hard ones or too many, so this fits a lot of tastes. Recommended.
