In a blitzkrieg of just 73 days, the Japanese forces captured the entire Malayan archipelago, including the great fortress city of Singapore. The fall of Malaya was a resounding shock and humiliation to the Allied armies, who had vastly underestimated their opponents. Force 136 was the cover identity given to the Far East branch of the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), which supported resistance and paramilitary groups working in Japanese-occupied territories, carrying out unconventional warfare, sabotage, local aid and reconnaissance missions.
