The Germans planned to attack from the north and south simultaneously, in an attempt to pinch off the Kursk salient. After the German offensive stalled, the Soviets launched a counteroffensive on 12 July 1943: Operation Kutuzov. By August 1943, their second counteroffensive, Operation Polkovodets Rumyantsev, was launched. The Soviets built a formidable defence, causing the Germans to delay whilst they built up their forces. In the end, Hitler diverted his forces to central Europe following the invasion of Sicily by the Allies.
